He was a model to me of artistic labor and discipline, even if those early paintings were painfully amateurish. The painting followed me from Amherst to my first job in New York, and on to London and Delhi. IT WASN’T MY intention to start an essay about artistic beginnings with a story of artistic death. I’m especially moved by those first moments of validation by which an artist comes out to himself, as it were. It’s this, the inexorability of the correspondence between an artist and the world, that gives those first steps their magical quality.

No one captured the massive cultural and economic disparities of my life in Delhi (and his in Lahore) like Toor. Fresco from Pompeii, Italy, from the first century, showing the entry of the Trojan horse into Troy. Photo: Luisa Ricciarini/Bridgeman ImagesThe “Iliad,” a poem about war, death and suffering on the plains of Troy, has taken a back seat in recent decades to the other Homeric epic, the “Odyssey,” in some ways its sequel. Since the “Iliad” deals with raw violence and a violent fighter, Achilles, whose rage at his own commander centers its loosely organized plot, the less savage and more linear tale of Odysseus’ homecoming has seemed more in tune with the times. Modern writers and filmmakers usually turn to the “Odyssey,” not the “Iliad,” for adaptations, from James Joyce’s “Ulysses” to Uberto Pasolini’s film “The Return,” scheduled for release next year.

Here is a chance to see it live, in a McCarter Theater Center-Berkeley Repertory Theater co-production. The play was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2007, when Vogel was on the jury. James Warwick directs the world-premiere production. Directed by John Collins, the company’s artistic director, this world-premiere production instead samples chunks from each of the novel’s 18 episodes, letting them erupt in all their verbosity, vulgarity, vivacity and — it is Joyce, after all — opacity. Cross that with the trans-Atlantic success of “Six,” and you arrive at this production: a Lizzie Borden rock musical with an all-female cast.

Last winter, the 37-year-old literary critic and Wesleyan professor Merve Emre stood in front of a microphone in Rachel Comey's Soho boutique. While the others had largely opted to pull boldfaced names from the Review's archives — like a 1985 Gore Vidal piece about Tennessee Williams — Merve Emre would be reading Merve Emre. If you were an American artist or writer in the 1920s, Paris was where you wanted to be. She had lived in New York once, just eight years before, but in her absence the city had been scaled up: new skyscrapers were rising, the population was exploding, and every block, it seemed, was abuzz with commerce and construction. (The market crash of October 1929 was still many months away). Suddenly, Paris was passé. The exhibition’s focus is a disbound scrapbook with seven to nine photographs per page, all taken over the course of that year, as Abbott paced the streets (and piers, bridges and train platforms) with a hand-held camera and a compulsion to capture New York’s unruly, cutthroat modernity.

But history is complicated on the shores of Lake Garda, a 143-square-mile body of water just west of Verona. In many ways, Garda—its crisp blue water reflecting the nearby Alps—feels like a curiously liminal space. Its northern shores were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until after World War I; even today, German-language street-signs dot the villages along its northern coast. Traces of Venetian architecture abound, remnants of the Venetian Empire’s conquering of several lakeside strongholds. On the southern shore, the beautiful town of Sermione boasts the extant grounds of a Roman villa named after the poet Catullus.

IF LOS ANGELES FEELS like it was designed for the driver, and New York City for the subway passenger, Dublin, one could say, was made for the pedestrian. It remains true today; few places better suit a weekend of wandering. That a historian can be a local celebrity testifies to the degree to which the past remains present here. Dublin is an ideal place to indulge, since you’ll be sure to walk it off. DAY 1 | SATURDAY8:30 a.m.: Arrive at Dublin Airport, just over 6 miles north of the city center.
‘Jacob’s Room’: A Young Man Etched in Absence

James Joyce ’s “Ulysses” was published in Paris, and T.S. Because of this, Virginia Woolf’s novel “Jacob’s Room,” which was also published in 1922, hasn’t always received the attention it deserves. That some of her later novels—“To the Lighthouse” (1927) and “The Waves” (1931)—are perhaps even more accomplished hasn’t helped. Yet, it was in “Jacob’s Room” that Woolf first experimented with the episodic narrative she would use in “To the Lighthouse.” The novel also contains some of Woolf’s most startling sentences. One character observes that “each word” fell from Jacob’s mouth “like a disc new cut.” That may not always be true of Jacob, but it is of Woolf’s novel, which is full of such coins.
